Situated several kilometres outside Stone Town at Bububu, near the ruins of Mtoni Palace, the first palace of Sultan Seyyid Said.
Mtoni Marine is ideal as either a stop over if you do not want to stay in Stone Town, or for 2-3 nights if one want to experience the culture of Stone Town, do not want the noise associated with the town, and would like good-looking views of the ocean and Chapwani Island. Mtoni Marine would be a place to stay.
NUMBER OF ROOMS & DESCRIPTION:
The hotel has a combination of really nice rooms to some budget rooms
(standard rooms). They also have one of the finest restaurants on the island where one can dine in style. The Bububu area is of historical interest as you'll find the ruins of two Sultan palaces as well as some interesting Persian baths. The hotel offers a relaxed, laid-back place to escape the hustle and bustle of Stone Town. We only recommend you spend a night or two here if you plan to really experience Stone Town, which is a 6km taxi drive away. The rooms are located in lush tropical gardens and are all air-conditioned.
They are divided into categories: Palm Court, Club Rooms, Standard Rooms and Bungalows.
The Palm Court rooms are the best option. They're situated in a
double-storey block and have views of the sea - you can even see as far as Zanzibar's satellite islands of Chapwani, Changuu, Snake and Bawe. The rooms have tiled floors and private balconies or verandas. The four upstairs rooms have baths with a view, while the downstairs bathrooms have showers only. They are well appointed and highly recommended if you are staying at the hotel. The Standard rooms don't have much character and are very basic. They're situated at the back of the site near the road. Each room has a twin bed and an en-suite bathroom. The Bungalows are also fairly basic, but suit families
as they have a living room, a simple kitchen with fridge and a private
porch. There are two- and three-bedroomed bungalows. These two categories of rooms are only for walk in customers and are used only when the hotel does not have availability in the Palm Court and Club Rooms.
The Club Rooms, also set in a block, are second best, although they don't have a sea view. They have verandas overlooking the garden which don't offer much privacy from your neighbour.
RESTAURANTS & BAR:
The Mtoni Marine Restaurant, run by Waldemar, is well-known for its excellent fusion cuisine using tantalising local spices. The fare includes generous seafood lunches, beach barbeques (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and an a la carte menu. This open-air thatched restaurant is situated right on the beach, which makes it perfect for romantic dinners. One can enjoy the meal on the terrace, in the spice garden or at a table on the beach (you're allowed to kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes). There is usually some form of live entertainment in the evenings: a Masala night with a local Taarab band (a mixture of Arabic, Indian and African music) on Tuesdays and an African jazz group on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There's also the Mcheza Bar, which is situated near the beach and has a good selection of cocktails, snacks and reasonably priced meals, including pizzas and burgers.
