Matemwe Bungalows is situated on the north east coast of Zanzibar, about an hour by car from Stone Town. Matemwe is one of the most peaceful and scenic locations where nature is still un-spoilt. The swimming pool is the Blue/Green Ocean in front of your bungalow which stretches far beyond the horizon to touch land again in Indonesia some 3000 miles away.
NUMBER OF ROOMS & DESCRIPTION:
Rooms/ Bungalows All 14 en-suite bungalows are built of local stone and have Mikuti rooves and are directly overlooking the Indian Ocean. Each has a large veranda where you can laze in your own hammocks. Most of the fixtures and fittings are made from local materials, mainly Coconut wood, whilst the soft furnishings are locally produced materials made by local women’s groups, and the matting made by the blind association in Stone Town. The sun, through our solar system, supplies lighting and hot water, hence the bungalows do not have air-conditioning except by the sea breezes. Television has not reached us yet. The large luxurious suite room bungalows have a king size bed and a single bed, whereas the Self contained bungalows are double
or twin.
RESTAURANTS & BAR:
The menu is mainly seafood, “The catch of the day” might
actually be yours!! The kitchen has been praised for its high quality and diversity in combining local cuisine with that of other nations. On request the chefs will try to fulfill your special wishes, e.g. vegetarian food.
Each morning clinets will find a tea/coffee tray on your veranda, so that we can sit back, wake up slowly and enjoy the sunrise before breakfast. 85% of our staffare from the local village and the management ensure a friendly quiet and efficient service even if it is a little slow. Our staff are always willing to please. Our new open-air bar under the palm trees on the sand is a peaceful retreat.
OTHER FACILITIES & SERVICES:
Recreation in this area is one of leisure and tranquillity. Instead of speedboats or water skiing, we can offer you sailing with the local “Ngalawa” (traditional fishing boats with wooden outriggers), snorkelling or diving at the unique and colourful Mnemba reef. For the lucky ones, whales, dolphins or sea turtles might be spotted at close range. There is a fully equipped PADI recognised dive centre on the beach, where kayaks can also be hired.
