Shooting Star Lodge is located on the north east coast of Zanzibar, about five kilometres to the north of the fishing village of Kiwengwa. It sits on a hill above the back of the beach , looking out over a beautiful palm-lined arc of white sand and turquoise lagoon beyond.
NUMBER OF ROOMS & DESCRIPTION:
The best rooms here are the Sea View Cottages, which are built to the south of the main area in two staggered rows, allowing each cottage to benefit from the stunning view. These rooms are simple yet stylish, all with private bathrooms, showers, hot and cold running water, ceiling or bedside fans and Zanzibarian four poster beds with mosquito nets as pictured opposite.
The Garden Lodge Rooms, located on the northern side of and slightly behind the main areas, are housed within a single structure and do not have the outlook or feel. We would only recommend that you use these rooms if the cottages were full.
The original Beach Bandas are still in place. They do enjoy a nice position above the beach, but they are pretty rudimentary. Prices are from around $15 per person, but we do not usually take advance bookings because we feel that customers should take a look around before deciding to staying there.
RESTAURANTS & BAR:
The food at Shooting Star is to a good standard, using the superb local produce to create a wide range of dishes, many of which are authentically Zanzibarian. Seafood obviously predominates, but other alternatives are available.
All meals are taken in the main restaurant, generally most guests staying at the lodge will pull a few tables together at dinner and get to telling safari stories. More private romantic dinners for two can also be arranged.
We suggest that you just stay on a breakfast and dinner rate as it will leave you free to take lunch out if you trip into Stonetown for the day.
The bar is well stocked with soft drinks, beers, South African wines and international spirits at reasonable prices.
OTHER FACILITIES & SERVICES:
Shooting Star is definitely a nice option for people looking for this kind of small, intimate lodge. The main detracting factors are the proximity of the lodge to a couple of the larger, less sympathetic beach clubs along the strand and the fact that there is no specialist dive facility at the lodge. This is why Shooting Star gains such a relatively low rating in comparison with its otherwise excellent standards.
